Export is a snapshot, not a deletion request. Save the archive you need, open it, then remove chats, files, memories, shared links, connected apps, billing, and the account through their own controls. Do not delete a whole Google Account when you only mean to remove Gemini activity.

If your goal is only to change whether future chats train a model, use the AI training and retention controls guide. Before either personal-account exit
- Name the account. Record the provider, sign-in email, personal or managed workspace, subscription route, and whether you also use an API or developer account.
- Request the official export. Start from the signed-in product or provider privacy page, not a link in an email or search advertisement.
- Verify the archive. Download it on a trusted device, open the index or structured files, and check that several expected conversations, dates, and attachments are present. An export is a point-in-time copy and later activity will not be inside it.
- Keep only what has a purpose. The archive can contain sensitive prompts, filenames, and account details. Store it under the same protection as the source data and securely remove extra downloads and synchronized trash.
- Inventory separate copies. List uploaded files, projects or Gems, saved memories, public links, connected services, API keys, browser extensions, automations, local downloads, and collaborator copies.
Personal ChatGPT path
- Export and wait for the package. OpenAI says export is available to Free, Plus, and Pro users, can take up to seven days, and the emailed download link expires after 24 hours. It is not available through that route for ChatGPT Business or Enterprise.
- Open and inspect it. Confirm the archive belongs to the intended account and contains representative chats before relying on it.
- Remove objects that have separate controls. Archiving a chat retains it. Deleting a chat is irreversible and schedules it for permanent deletion within 30 days, subject to stated exceptions. Where Library is available, deleting a chat does not delete its Library file. Project and custom-GPT files follow the lifetime of their container.
- Clear persistence and sharing. Saved memories are separate from chat history. Disconnecting a synced app stops future access, but does not erase information already used in chats or saved memory. Delete shared links separately.
- Check billing before account deletion. OpenAI says deleting the account permanently removes access to ChatGPT and the API. A directly billed ChatGPT Plus subscription is canceled with account deletion, but an Apple App Store or Google Play subscription must be canceled in that store.
- Delete through the official account or Privacy Portal route. Save the confirmation without preserving sensitive content. OpenAI says account deletion is permanent and data is deleted within 30 days except for limited data it may retain where required or permitted by law.
ChatGPT completion check
- The export opened and the required records are readable.
- Library files, Projects or GPT knowledge, memories, shared links, connected apps, API keys, and automations were reviewed separately.
- The correct billing route shows cancellation when one was required.
- The account-deletion confirmation and stated window were recorded.
Personal Gemini path
- Build the Takeout package deliberately. Google says Gemini exports require both Gemini for Gems for created Gems and My Activity > Gemini Apps for chats, media, and uploaded files. Open the archive and confirm both expected categories are present.
- Delete Gemini Apps Activity at the intended scope. Choose a single item, date range, or all time. Turning activity off changes future handling but is not the same as deleting existing activity; Google says chats can still be retained for 72 hours when activity is off.
- Clean up separate objects. Review Gems and public links separately. Disconnecting a connected app stops future Gemini access but does not delete Gemini activity or source data already held by Gmail, Drive, Photos, or another service.
- Allow for documented exceptions. Google says some conversations reviewed by human reviewers can be retained separately from the Google Account for up to three years. Do not promise that one activity deletion instantly erases every retained copy.
- Cancel the right subscription. Gemini benefits can be part of a Google One plan. Cancel that plan through Google One or the store that bills it and verify the effective date; deleting activity is not subscription cancellation.
- Do not delete the whole Google Account by mistake. Google's whole-account deletion removes other services and data, including Gmail and Drive. Use it only when the intended outcome is to leave the entire Google Account, not merely Gemini.
Gemini completion check
- The Takeout archive opened and included the intended Gemini activity and Gem data.
- The selected Gemini Apps Activity range is gone, and Gems, public links, connections, source-service copies, and local exports were checked separately.
- The Google One or app-store billing record reflects the intended cancellation.
- The Google Account remains intact unless deleting that entire account was the deliberate goal.
Managed workspace: stop before you export or delete
Do not use a personal-account route until the administrator confirms it applies. ChatGPT Business and Enterprise do not use the personal export path described above, and Google Workspace administrators can control Gemini access and history. Work or school data may be owned by the organization, subject to retention or legal hold, or need transfer to another person. Ask which account and records policy applies before exporting, deleting, transferring ownership, disconnecting apps, or canceling seats. If access is ending soon, get that answer before the account is disabled.
Close the loop without keeping another risky copy
Record the provider, account, export date, archive verification result, separate objects checked, billing route, deletion request date, stated completion window, and confirmation identifier. Do not paste sensitive prompts into the record. Recheck after the provider's documented window and use its official privacy or support route if the account or billed subscription remains active.
A clean exit is not one button. It is a verified export followed by a provider-specific inventory, separate cleanup actions, the correct billing decision, the narrowest intended deletion, and a final confirmation.
